The Glossop Concert Society was formed in 1991 to promote programmes of Classical Music in the Glossop area, largely due to the efforts of the Society's Artistic Director - Jeff Snowdon.

As well as the public concerts, the Society has organised annual events involving all the local schools and other local organisations, including MENCAP and the PHAB Club, which has led to the regeneration of the Primary Schools Music Festival.

Over recent years the 'Season' has comprised 4 Saturday Evening Concerts and 2 Saturday morning Coffee Concerts. Whilst the emphasis has always been on a 'classical' theme, the Society has tried to include in its programme concerts to appeal to a wide variety of taste. A particularly popular concert to a younger audience some years was "Pachakuti" - Music & Culture of the Andes. To encourage the attendance of young people, the Society has always had a policy of free entry for 'under 16s' for all concerts. A more detailed view of past concerts can be seen under

The Schubert Octet

A large audience were privileged  to hear this delightful but  rarely performed monumental Octet in F Major for  strings, clarinet, bassoon and horn. The first half of the programme a  section of the ensemble played the Quintet in B Minor by Brahms

String Quartets by Haydn, Janįček a ( a very dramatic work ) and Borodin ( the popular No. 2 from which the music for Kismet was taken ) were thoroughly enjoyed by the audience.

Piano Recital by Peter Lawson

Peter's much appreciated programme included Mussorgsky's spectacular masterpiece "Pictures at an Exhibition" and pieces by Debussy, Martinu and the Spanish compose Villa-Lobos.

A Summer Evening of Baroque Music for Flute, 'Cello & Harpsichord from one of the leading chamber ensembles - Rachel Brown, David Francis & Jonathan Price. The programme contained music by Bach, Telemann, Handel, Vivaldi and Leclair

Benefits Concert for Willow Wood Hospice

The Melandra Wind Soloists, under the direction of Laurence Perkins ( left ), gave a delightful selection of music written for Wind Ensemble, inc. the William Alwyn Concerto for Flute, played by Maria Raynor ( right ). The arranger ( G. Kay) of "Valse Nobles et Sentementales" by Ravel, attended the concert

Piano Recital by Sergei Duchachev

The return to Glossop of this celebrated Russian pianist was greeted by a large, enthusiastic audience. His recital included  music by Beethoven, Chopin. Ravel and Schumann.

The concert was sponsored by Dunelm Records Ltd.

The concert, given by the Northern Chamber Orchestra, was attended by the Mayor & Mayoress of the High Peak. The varied programme included a Haydn Violin Concerto and Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" & some 20th Century music. The large audience enjoyed a wine reception during the interval

A programme, ranging from purely Irish traditional music to Cape Brettan, Cajun, Apellachian and Scottish music, was enjoyed by a large and very appreciative audience in the Victoria Hall, Glossop

Piano Recital by Anthony Goldstone & Caroline Clemmow

goldclem2.jpg (80627 bytes)The Society's President,  in the first half,  played a beautiful Nocturne by the relative unknown Russian composer, Lyapunov,  and then a masterful performance of Schubert's  Sonata in B Flat Major.  In the second half, together with his wife , Caroline Clemmow, he presented a dazzling performance of Rimsky-Karsakov's own setting, for piano for four hands, of the popular Scheherazade, which in the excellent acoustics of the church had the audience spellbound.
