Welcome to the

2006-07 Season

Welcome to the 15th Series of professional concerts in Glossop.

We all need friends and a concert series is no exception. We have been blessed with a supportive audience and generous patrons over the years and like to think that the concerts are an uplifting and pleasant evening out - a chance to meet friends and socialise as well as enjoying sublime music.

But equally important to us are the artists, many of whom enjoy coming back time and time again to perform for an appreciative audience in the delightful setting of Glossop Parish Church or the warm environment of the Community College. Three of the concerts in this series feature old friends who have played for us many times before, and in the case of the Lawson Trio we have followed their progress from students to leading professional artists.

But this is more than just a concert. Arrive early (from 7pm) and you will be serenaded by some of the rising stars of our own community, ranging from flautists,  pianists and children’s choirs to brass ensembles.

Once again we bring you a varied programme of concerts adding to the rich tapestry of cultural events in the town. We hope that you will enjoy savouring something new as well as the more familiar.

Glossop Parish Church

The Lawson Piano Trio

Fenella Humphreys violin  l    Alexander Holladay ‘cello  l   Annabelle Lawson piano

The Lawson Trio last performed for us in 2003 and we are delighted to welcome them back with a programme including Beethoven’s Piano Trio No. 1 in E Flat Major and a new work by Manchester composer Camden Reeves, “Starlight Squid” … don’t be frightened by the slippery title, it’s a lovely piece.

The Trio formed in Cambridge University in 2000 when its members were undergraduates on the instrumental award scheme. Since then the individual players have carved illustrious careers as soloists and the ensemble has been awarded a  Leverhulme Chamber Music Fellowship by the Royal Academy of Music. The group pursues a busy concert schedule and recently made its South Bank debut. Alongside recital work the ensemble also works in association with the Schubert Ensemble, giving chamber music workshops to school children across the country.

“White Water”

Julian Gregory Fiddle  l   Mark Jordan pipes, whistles, concertina    l   Matthew Compton piano accordion

Clifford Lantaff clarsach   l   Rob Lea bodhran, bones

When five classical musicians from the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra got together to play some traditional folk music for fun they could scarcely have imagined that they would end up playing at festivals as far flung as the Orkneys and the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall.

Following his fascinating introduction to the Northumbrian Pipes in last year’s Coffee Concerts, we welcome back Mark Jordan, this time with the full team, to present an evening of flings, reels and traditional airs from every corner of the British Isles.

“Tell Me The Truth About Love”

Lois Murray Soprano   l Chris O’Hara Baritone  l John Miles Piano

The final words of W.H.Auden’s humorous poem provide the title for this evening of opera, cabaret song and poetry exploring the well documented, if unpredictable, subject of love.

With contributions from the masters of the amorous song, Mozart, Rossini and Puccini, as well as Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and a host of other perennial favourites, join us for an evening of high-octane romance with three artists who need no introduction to Glossop audiences.
