Water Folk
Music of the British Isles When
five classical musicians from the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra got together
to play some traditional folk music for fun they could hardly have
imagined that they would end up playing at festivals as far flung as the
Orkneys and the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. Returning
by popular demand to launch the Society’s 20th anniversary Series, White
Water brings an evening of flings, reels and traditional airs from every
corner of the British Isles played on authentic instruments including the
fiddle, clarsach harp, Northumbrian Pipes, accordion and the bodhran Drum. Sunday
30th January, 3pm Glossop
Parish Church Tom
McKinney Guitar
Acclaimed
as one of Britain's finest young guitarists, Tom McKinney is one of the
most sought after players of his generation, delighting audiences at many
of the country’s major festivals, including Aldeburgh, St Magnus and
Buxton, and working with major orchestras and ensembles. His
repertoire ranges from classical guitar music to the Latin American dances
of Astor Piazzola and into the cutting-edge with his astounding recitals
of works for guitar and live electronics. Join us for an evening celebrating the diverse and rich repertoire of this versatile instrument, including classical music by the “Beethoven of the Guitar”, Mauro Giuliani, folk-inspired miniatures by the Paraguayan genius Agustin Barrios, and the virtuosic fireworks of present day classics. From his early life in Yorkshire and student days in wartime London, he built a career in which he worked with many of the great figures of the 20th century including David Oistrakh and Arturo Toscanini. He became the leader of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and was a key figure in the development of professional music education in the UK.
