The Derbyshire Sinfonia

"...the most cooperative and sensitive orchestra we have ever had"

Glossop Choral Society - Elgar's "Dream of Gerontius" 1999

Established in 1999 the Derbyshire Sinfonia draws its members from leading professional players from the Northwest and Midlands. It aims to provide high quality performances to enhance the cultural life of the area to support local music making.

The Orchestra has rapidly established a reputation for its interpretation of baroque and classical repertoire and is the resident professional orchestra for the Glossop & District Choral Society, the Pennine Singers and the Tameside Choral.

As well as choral work the Sinfonia has presented two orchestral concerts in Glossop. In 2005, in association with Peak District Music Centres and Glossop Concert Society, the orchestra hosted the first Peak District Orchestral Course. This offered the opportunity for 50 young musicians to work alongside principal players from the Sinfonia, culminating in a joint performance of the two orchestras.

The Orchestra's founder and Director is Jeff Snowdon
